Over the last few decades, Helidon Xhixha (born in 1970) has established himself as a leading figure on the contemporary scene, achieving great international critical acclaim. 

Referring to his iconic stainless steel sculptures, the prominent Italian art critic Luca Beatrice defined him as "one of the most interesting sculptors on the contemporary scene."

The vision and innovative technique of this artist, who currently lives between Milan and Dubai, translate into a monumental public art that redefines the relationship between sculpture and its surroundings.

Having inherited his passion for the arts from his father, Helidon Xhixha decided to study in Italy at the prestigious Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where he was finally able to develop his technique. In 1998, he was awarded a scholarship to Kingston University in London. Here he had the opportunity to work with new materials, including stainless steel, which would later become the privileged medium of choice for an artistic research project that developed over a period of about fifteen years. His three-dimensional stainless steel sculptures highlight the intrinsic relationship between the artwork and its surroundings. He himself declared:  "I don't sculpt materials, I rather use them to sculpt light."

 

Since his student days, Helidon Xhixha has received commissions in various countries, from Europe to Latin America, from the Middle East to the United States. In June 2007, one of his best-known works was presented at the Cornice Art Fair in Venice to pay tribute to the victims of September 11.

The six-meter-high installation, entitled The Renaissance of the Twin Towers, depicts the American flag with the Twin Towers: an expression of the desire for hope and optimism that animates humanity, the sculpture has been exhibited in various cultural capitals, including Florence and Berlin.

 

In 2015, Helidon Xhixha took part in the 56th Venice Biennale with a work representing the Syrian pavilion: a floating installation entitled Iceberg. With its reflective surface, the four-meter-high stainless steel sculpture captivated both the public and critics, also receiving extensive media coverage. The large Iceberg floating on the waters of the Grand Canal and the lagoon served as a warning about global warming and its potential impact on a place like Venice in the near future.

Immediately afterwards, Helidon Xhixha offered a contemporary interpretation of Leonardo's Last Supperentitled Everlasting, which was installed at Milan Malpensa Airport: twelve mirror-polished stainless steel pillars placed in front of twelve panels reproducing the painting. Each column represents one of the Apostles, arranged in perfect symmetry around the larger figure in the center: Jesus Christ. To depict Judas the traitor, Xhixha created a column in opaque, burnished Corten steel, which contrasts with the smooth surfaces of the others. The combination of these materials evokes the theme of Good versus Evil, a fundamental idea in da Vinci's masterpiece. Presented in such an important exhibition space, the installation was seen by around 20 million passers-by.

 

In the wake of this success, in 2016 Xhixha presented a major solo exhibition entitled Shining Rock in Pietrasanta, on the northern coast of Tuscany. The works were designed and placed throughout the city to highlight the beauty and rich history of this fascinating town. Once again, the reflective surfaces of the installations attracted, over a four-month period, almost 50,000 visitors, many of whom came from abroad to admire these extraordinary pieces in Carrara marble, bronze, and stainless steel. A tribute to the history and local tradition of marble, these works not only interact with their surroundings but also mark a change in Helidon's artistic practice, because of the use, alongside stainless steel, of materials taken directly from the earth.

 

The following year, in 2016, Xhixha received the Public Medal for best installation at the first London Design Biennale, held at Somerset House. His work, entitled Bliss, was exhibited in the most prominent spot in the entire building, the large central space. The exhibition, which included works from 37 countries inspired by the theme of “utopia”, offered the visiting people the opportunity to interact with Xhixha's sculpture by reflecting themselves in it. The installation aimed to blur the boundary between art and design to create a stimulating and progressive experience—both as individuals and as a community—of the Platonic concept of Utopia within an ideal city.

 

In the summer of 2017, at the personal invitation of the Director of the Uffizi Galleries, Helidon Xhixha presented an exhibition immersed in the splendid setting of the Boboli Gardens in Florence. The exhibition, entitled In Ordine Sparso (In Scattered Order), explored the concepts of chaos and order through an ambitious series of imposing sculptures and installations. The exhibition is divided into two sections, in which the difference between Chaos and Order is immediately clear. In the Limonaia of the Boboli Gardens, the artist looks to nature in order to discover chaos. The primary source of inspiration came from the crystal caves of Naica in Mexico. The artist's response in relation to the concept of Order is inspired by the basic theories of sacred geometry with large structures created in response to the golden ratio, including related mathematical principles, whose roots lie in nature.

 

In 2019, the exhibition Riflessi di Luce (Reflections of Light), curated by Eike Schmidt, featured twenty monumental works by the artist scattered throughout the city of Lugano, transforming it into an open-air museum. In the same year, at the Steel and Stone exhibition in Forte dei Marmi, Xhixha installed monumental works in stainless steel and marble in iconic locations around the renowned Versilian town.

 

in July of the same year, in collaboration with photographer Giacomo Braglia, Xhixha presented an environmental project: The Twin Bottles: Message in a Bottle, a site-specific installation consisting of two large stainless steel bottles structured to float on water. The installation was presented in front of the Palazzo Vendramin Calergi, floating on the Grand Canal in Venice with a provocative environmental message against plastic pollution in the oceans.

 

At the invitation of the National Institute of Contemporary Art, Xhixha exhibited nine monumental works in a solo exhibition entitled Casale Risplende. The exhibition, curated by Anselmo Villata, was being held in the historic center of Casale Monferrato from October 2020 to February 2021.

 

In December 2020, "Luce, La rinascita di Venizia" (Light, The Rebirth of Venice), curated by Klodian Dedja, featured six monumental installations located at the Arsenale in Venice in an exhibition that evoked rebirth and awakening after the global pandemic.

In 2021, the exhibition "Reflexes," marking the 50th anniversary of "Forme nel Verde," presented a widespread solo exhibition of monumental sculptures in Val D'Orcia ( also put in Siena, in San Quirico D'Orcia, in Vitaleta, in Bagno Vignoni, in Torrentieri).

In the same year, at the invitation of the Italian Embassy in Tirana, he exhibited his solo exhibition Unione di Luce  (Union of Light) at the Italian Embassy Residence in Tirana and in its main squares, Piazza Italia.

 

In 2023, he exhibited five monumental sculptures at Palazzo Reale in Milan with the exhibition Xhixha, la Reggia alla specchio (Xhixha, the Palace in the Mirror), promoted by the Municipality of Milan. - Cultura, produced by Palazzo Reale with the Helidon Xhixha studio and curated by Michele Bonuomo, traces a five-stage itinerary through the spaces of the Milanese palace, accompanying visitors from the Grand Staircase designed by Piermarini to the sumptuous historic rooms.

In the same year, Lake Iseo, in the Basso Sebino area of the Municipality of Iseo and in the territory of Clusane in the region of Lombardia, hosted a widespread environmental exhibition of monumental sculptures and a solo exhibition in the exhibition halls of the Fondazione l'Arsenale, consisting of wall sculptures and sketches.

The exhibition, entitled ACQUARIATERRAFUOCO, (WATERLANDFIRE) was organized by the Fondazione l'Arsenale with the patronage of the municipality of Iseo and curated by Ilaria Bignotti and Camilla Remondina.

In December 2023, in the exhibition entitled Vis à vis,  Sculptures in Dialogue by Helidon Xhixha, which unfolded between the Renaissance town of Città di Castello and the medieval town of Montone, curated by Michele Bonuomo with the patronage of the municipalities of Città di Castello and Montone, Helidon Xhixha opened a dialogue with the masters of the 16th century, Signorelli and Raffaello, and with the prestigious sites of the historic centres of the two towns.

 

 

 

For Xhixha, the monument is not only a physical object but also a reflection of the external environment and, at the same time, an abstraction. His artistic career has redefined the boundaries of contemporary sculpture and will continue to shape our vision in the years to come.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Ninth edition of the National Art award by the City of Novara – October 2009 
Organized by the artistic and cultural association Art Action, under the patronage of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture of the Piedmont Region, the Province of Novara and FIAF (Italian Federation of Photographic Associations)
The National Art Award of the City of Novara is a valuable initiative that enriches the cultural offerings of a city that is opening up more and more in an engaging manner to the art world. The mayor of Novara, Massimo Giordano with great enthusiasm has always supported this event encouraging it since it’s first edition. According to the Head of culture of the municipality of Novara, Giancarlo Pessarelli, and the Artistic Director of the City Award, Vincenzo Scardino, the artworks submitted and selected by the artistic committee have highly qualitative characteristics. Novara therefore, with this ninth Art award, boast an initiative highly appreciated and welcomed by national critics.
In the occasion of this prestigious event Helidon Xhixha, as great master of contemporary art is honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award of the city of Novara. 
 
2003
First prize, second edition of Gemine Muse, Young Artists in Italian Museums.
Under the patronage of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and in collaboration with GAI (Young Italian Artists) and CIDAC Association (City of Art and Culture) Helidon Xhixha received the first prize presenting his artwork Light and Shade.
